Member news - plastics reductionThe Heal the Bay in giving up single-use bags was Dec. 18th. Coastkeeper, along with other environmental groups, community organizations, businesses and individuals, applaud the San Diego City Council’s Natural Resources and Culture Committee December 3 vote to move the Plastic and Paper Bag Reduction Ordinance to full City Council within 90 days. The ordinance, if adopted, will be a big step forward in reducing plastic bag litter in local communities and from entering the ocean. Read the press release here. 400,000 Ralphs Supermarkets reusable bags purchased!Plastic grocery bags constitute a large part of our state’s waste on a yearly basis. Californians use more than 19 billion plastic grocery bags each year, creating 147,038 tons of waste in our landfills. With Californians throwing away over 600 bags per second, they are creating enough waste every year to circle the planet over 250 times. Today over 400,000 reusable bags have been purchased by Ralphs customers! Two years ago Ralphs and ESCA entered into a relationship to offer reusable bags as an alternative to plastic and paper bags. The reusable bags display the logos of EarthShare and member organizations and are for purchase in all Ralphs Supermarkets throughout Southern California. A portion of the sales are donated to EarthShare. Those funds have been used for capacity building by ESCA and its member organizations.
